About Me
Upground is the young vibrant East L.A. band that has developed a huge following throughout the Southwest in the four short years they have been performing live. Their music is an indefinable blend of Ska, reggae, rock, and CUMBIA! It is sung in Spanish AND English. Their amazing horn section has been widely praised by everyone from the L.A. Times to Tu Ciudad magazine. They recently released their debut full length CD called “Feel the Vibe” which received widespread critical acclaim. An overwhelmingly positive L.A. Times performance review brought larger attention; the CD Release Party for “Feel the Vibe” sold out the famous Hollywood venue The Knitting Factory and nationwide cable network siTV decided to focus on them for their “Jammin” television reality show. In “Jammin”, Upground got to meet and perform with their East L.A. mentors, Los Lobos. Upground went on to win the 2006 Sprint Battle of the Bands, received a publishing deal with prestigious PEERMUSIC and have had their music played on local radio including L.A.’s Indie 103.1 (a major FM radio station), and they were profiled in Tu Ciudad magazine as “the next big thing from East L.A.” There has been no stopping the pace. The spring of 2007 found Upground making their debut showcase at the world famous South by Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas. Leading up to the showcase, Upground played a capacity filled siTV sponsored mini-tour billed as “Upground’s ROAD TO SXSW”. Latino University Magazine named them “Best College Band to See” and they followed that up with another mini tour, this time to Colorado. They also just made their first ever trip to New York City to showcase at the respected Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC). Upground has come a long way from the high school jazz band and orchestras the members started in. They have performed with or shared the same stage with artists from Ozomatli and Los Lobos to The Killers and played at universities throughout the West. They have transformed into one of the most sought after young bands in the competitive Los Angeles music scene. Where will they go next?
