Great Latin Music
Posted on: Wed, 03/05/2008 - 6:54pm
This week I want to talk about latin singers & bands that I love. It seems that this genre of folk-lorico/indie/alt/latin/pop music has limited play in the states, but looking to other latin countries for an outlet is a little trouble too. You hear the songs randomly on the radio, but not as a collective. I would like to be a DJ that gets this music heard.
Julieta Venegas - Amazing, uplifting, & genius. If I watch an interview I tear up. She hits me in all the right spots. A cross between Vicente Fernandez, Lola Beltran, & Juan Gabriel, yet very modern. Acoustic sounds & sometimes an electronic beat.
Chetes - His music is a combination of old traditional sounds, mixed with rock, & also very uplifting. He lives here in Brooklyn, so I'm dying to bump into him someday so I can talk to him about us doing a show together. A cross of Weezer, Juan Gabriel, & Pink Martini. Full rock band with Orchestral sounds.
Coti - Even though his sound can get a little too american I can't resist his happy, shiny sound. Great duets with Julieta, & Paulina Rubia. Yes, he produced Julieta's album, 'Si'. A cross of John Mellencamp, & Juan Gabriel. A full rock band.
Juana Molina - So she used to be on TV. So rarely does someone who comes from a TV show turn out to be so incredibly talented. I've never seen her live but I hear she is surrounded by all these crazy keyboards & her acoustic guitar. A cross of Beth Orton, & This Mortal Coil set in the jungle with all the sounds of nature in the music. I love her! Electronica meets nature on mushrooms.
Andrea Echeverri - Sweet. So poppy yet so gentle. Happy & nuturing. A cross of Julieta Venegas, & The Strawberry Alarm Clock. Acoustic & electronic.
Juan Rivas - Juan is from Spain. He mixes his happy, upbeat music that is made from a full band with trumpets & electronica. Very influence by Spain's original music, Flamenco. Tropical, and Lounge. A cross of Julio Iglesias, Pink Martini, & Julieta Venegas.
Miranda - I really only like their upbeat songs, but WOW! a FUN! band. All in spanish, but very influenced by electronic pop music; very european influenced. A cross of The Cure & Madonna. The lead singer is very sexy!
bobbyblue y patricio - (myspace.com/bobbybluenyc) Yes, this is my band.We are a cross of all of this music. Take a listen.
These are bands that are truly inspiring to me. I obviously have a affection for happy, uplifting music. So I hope to get more of you listening to these artist. They spread joy, & cheer. It's the best thing you can put into the world.
pura vida,
bobbyblue
